Lock picking is a hobby? Yes, although not widely known, lock picking is a hobby; complete with clubs, dues, members and competitions. Already popular in the Netherlands and Germany (LockPicking.org), lock picking (or lock sports, as it is sometimes called) has an avid and growing following in the United States. Bolstered by online support groups such as LockPicking101 and Yahoo Group ‘LockSports’, avid fans see each new lock as a puzzle and try to learn how to open it as quickly as possible.

It should be noted that both LockPicking101 and LockSports stress the ethical practice of lock picking (either as a sport or as training for the Locksmithing profession). In addition, they point out that lock picking is actually a lousy way to commit burglary. A crowbar or just a swift kick from ‘mister foot pick’ is a lot quicker, easier and effective in most circumstances.
